Gerda (Gertruida) de Waal von Maltitz (née de Kock), b. in Heilbron, 1911, educated at Oranje Girls‘ School, Bloemfontein and University of the Orange Free State, Bloemfontein (BA Languages + Art History). Married Dr Adrian Archibald von Maltitz on 28th October, 1939. Their 5 children are: Amalie, Helene, Alida, Hanna, Peter. They lived in their historic family home „Ye Rokkes“ at 28 Pallinghurst Street, Westcliff, Johannesburg, until they retired to their farm Driefontein, Dewetshof.
Gerda was art teacher at Harrismith High School, OFS (1935-1937) and at Voortrekker High School, Boksburg (1937-1939). She received some art tuition from Sidney Goldblatt, Johannesburg, and exhibited since 1930 in Bloemfontein and Johannesburg. She frequently travelled abroad, including an around-the-world trip in 1963 and 1984.
